Course Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course the learners will be able to do the following:
- Identify normal characteristics of the tympanic membrane (TM)
- List the diagnostic criteria of AOM
- Describe the difference between AOM and otitis media with effusion (OME)
- Identify some of the risk factors of AOM
- Describe essential features of the child’s history with suspected AOM
- Demonstrate the proper approach to the pediatric ear exam
- Demonstrate proper otoscopy technique in assessing the TM
- Identify the elements of the: Color, Other, Mobility, Position, Lighting, Entire surface, Translucency, External auditory canal and auricle, Seal (COMPLETES) ear exam
- Discriminate between effusion free and effusion ears
- Demonstrate proper assessment of TM mobility with the use of pneumatic otoscopy
- Treat and manage uncomplicated AOM according to current guidelines

Your Instructor
Dana Yvonne Preston, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, was awarded her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Frontier Nursing University in September 2019. Previously she received a Master of Nursing degree from Emory University in Atlanta Georgia in 1990 and shortly thereafter obtained national certification as a family nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She is currently practicing full-time with Baptist Primary Care in Jacksonville Florida and is entering her 20th year. During her many years of practice, she also taught and precepted nursing students. Currently, she is an online visiting professor with Chamberlain University in their FNP program teaching Advanced Physical Assessment.
